Senior Project Reflection

1. I would give myself a P-/P because I really felt as if when I was up there I presented all my knowledge abundantly in a clear, insightful manner.

2. I really believe I taught the students what flowers mean and how complex the system to provide them is, that they aren't just grown, they need to be taken care off while they go through channels, and that is what I am most proud of, of my presentation. That the students will walk out with knowledge of plants that have amazed us for generations

3. During my activities, I got the students involved by giving them flowers to work with hands-on, as I went around I spotted them and got them on track, they seemed to understand. I didn't just tell them how to take care of them, I told them why those methods, such as cutting at a 45* degree angle worked by how it land flat at the bottom of the container, clogging up the water supply.

4. "What is most important for a floriculturist to know in order to be successful?"
Best answer: Knowledge of the differential traits of growing flowers

5. Although I changed my topic in the beginning of the year, I didn't experience any difficulties. Although I  saw my focus change from the business aspect to the agrarian one because that was where all the knowledge was, the driving foundation, a few sellers were actually pretty ignorant, but never the major ones or the farmers themselves. In last month I had everything firmly established, I didn't doubt my research

6. The teachers didn't inform the students on several assignments leading to it hitting us near deadlines , and using hardcopy, turnitin.com, and blogspot confused alot of people

7. An Ap+, I had to heavily dedicate to being able to wake up at 1:30 A.M. to head to Mellano  & Co. to work till noon, it is difficult to show that, however, I feel through my I-search, science project and even moreso through my 2-hour project showed how I adsorbed so much knowledge simply by implementing myself in the environment, part farming, part business

2-Hour Blog Post

(1) What is your sponge activity?

For my sponge activity I will provide an assortment of flowers in front of the students, along with a vase, and have them try to set them in the best way they think* is possible, however, their lack of knowledge is shown, when I reveal that in fact, one of the cut flowers in there would actually kill off the others if placed in the same vase because it produces an acid and this isn't floristry, you need to be efficient, not vain

(2) What do you plan to do and say in the introduction?*

In my introduction I will speak on about how florists get their flowers for floriculturists, that they are grown on farms just like regular crops and taken to a mass market then distributed to the populace

(3) What do you plan to say in your foundation?

My foundation will summarize my introduction by explaining briefly the floral industry within L.A. County

(4) What will your 2 or 3 answers be for your 2 hour?

- Contacts within industry
- Having good quality/quantity of stock
- (Best Answer) Knowledge of the diversity of flowers

(5) What activities will you do for each answer and why?

-still searching***
-Using the flowers provided, having the students learn the names of all them, what they require, and try to guide them in how they would be cared for at the market
-still searching***

(6) How do you plan to conclude your 2 hour?*

To end my presentation will recap on what i said but in the briefest sense possible because I'm going to explain how it all fits together to the flowers they see at a florist

(7) How do you plan to decorate the room?

I will put a multitude of flowers within a  bucket on each of the tables, and with Mr. Pangs permission turn the AC on till it matches freezer temperatures to match the flower market
(8) What supplies/resources will you need to make your 2 hour possible?
-a diversified list of flowers
-several buckets full of water
-Florist Wrapping
...& anything else for the activities

Service Learning Reflection

During my stay there I helped move the orders around, compile them, take flowers from customers and wrap them up and load them up into their cars/trucks.

Interpretive
The most intensive part of what i did was simply going in at 11 o'clock at night and working till 12:00 on 2 hours of sleep, that drained me particularly but everyone else at the market were disciplined with their schedules. I was part of the process, as flowers came in, they were unloaded, set, then distributed among the sellers and customers. This is a business, but not a retail business, a wholesale one, everything had to be on time, in condition since their were so many orders to fill it took efficiency to get through it all. Simply understanding the commitment you need to put into a business is the first step, because you don't have anyone above you to take control, you need to watch yourself, its your own bread and butter, learning this I know now I would not want to operate a private business

Applied
Working at the Mellano & Co flower market helped me come to my best answer because although I was there, there seemed to be very little differences within all the wholesalers wares and pricing, making me believe that as long as they were being supplied with enough different flowers at good enough health then they were good, because the market cannot operate without the farms sending in the flowers everyday, however, the reverse is possible, thus a knowledge of the differential traits of flowers is best because that allows you the ability to switch between the successful growing of several varieties of flowers, opening up a bigger market for you, creating a better revenue while wholesale floriculturists are only to use what they have in stock and what they have being shipped to them
