Senior Project Reflection

1. I would give myself a P-/P because I really felt as if when I was up there I presented all my knowledge abundantly in a clear, insightful manner.

2. I really believe I taught the students what flowers mean and how complex the system to provide them is, that they aren't just grown, they need to be taken care off while they go through channels, and that is what I am most proud of, of my presentation. That the students will walk out with knowledge of plants that have amazed us for generations

3. During my activities, I got the students involved by giving them flowers to work with hands-on, as I went around I spotted them and got them on track, they seemed to understand. I didn't just tell them how to take care of them, I told them why those methods, such as cutting at a 45* degree angle worked by how it land flat at the bottom of the container, clogging up the water supply.

4. "What is most important for a floriculturist to know in order to be successful?"
Best answer: Knowledge of the differential traits of growing flowers

5. Although I changed my topic in the beginning of the year, I didn't experience any difficulties. Although I  saw my focus change from the business aspect to the agrarian one because that was where all the knowledge was, the driving foundation, a few sellers were actually pretty ignorant, but never the major ones or the farmers themselves. In last month I had everything firmly established, I didn't doubt my research

6. The teachers didn't inform the students on several assignments leading to it hitting us near deadlines , and using hardcopy, turnitin.com, and blogspot confused alot of people

7. An Ap+, I had to heavily dedicate to being able to wake up at 1:30 A.M. to head to Mellano  & Co. to work till noon, it is difficult to show that, however, I feel through my I-search, science project and even moreso through my 2-hour project showed how I adsorbed so much knowledge simply by implementing myself in the environment, part farming, part business

2-Hour Blog Post

(1) What is your sponge activity?

For my sponge activity I will provide an assortment of flowers in front of the students, along with a vase, and have them try to set them in the best way they think* is possible, however, their lack of knowledge is shown, when I reveal that in fact, one of the cut flowers in there would actually kill off the others if placed in the same vase because it produces an acid and this isn't floristry, you need to be efficient, not vain

(2) What do you plan to do and say in the introduction?*

In my introduction I will speak on about how florists get their flowers for floriculturists, that they are grown on farms just like regular crops and taken to a mass market then distributed to the populace

(3) What do you plan to say in your foundation?

My foundation will summarize my introduction by explaining briefly the floral industry within L.A. County

(4) What will your 2 or 3 answers be for your 2 hour?

- Contacts within industry
- Having good quality/quantity of stock
- (Best Answer) Knowledge of the diversity of flowers

(5) What activities will you do for each answer and why?

-still searching***
-Using the flowers provided, having the students learn the names of all them, what they require, and try to guide them in how they would be cared for at the market
-still searching***

(6) How do you plan to conclude your 2 hour?*

To end my presentation will recap on what i said but in the briefest sense possible because I'm going to explain how it all fits together to the flowers they see at a florist

(7) How do you plan to decorate the room?

I will put a multitude of flowers within a  bucket on each of the tables, and with Mr. Pangs permission turn the AC on till it matches freezer temperatures to match the flower market
(8) What supplies/resources will you need to make your 2 hour possible?
-a diversified list of flowers
-several buckets full of water
-Florist Wrapping

3-18-2011 10 hours5-14-2011 10 hours• Charlie Moreno 626-375-2728 (best time to call around 12pm)

During my stay there I helped move the orders around, compile them, take flowers from customers and wrap them up and load them up into their cars/trucks.

Interpretive
The most intensive part of what i did was simply going in at 11 o'clock at night and working till 12:00 on 2 hours of sleep, that drained me particularly but everyone else at the market were disciplined with their schedules. I was part of the process, as flowers came in, they were unloaded, set, then distributed among the sellers and customers. This is a business, but not a retail business, a wholesale one, everything had to be on time, in condition since their were so many orders to fill it took efficiency to get through it all. Simply understanding the commitment you need to put into a business is the first step, because you don't have anyone above you to take control, you need to watch yourself, its your own bread and butter, learning this I know now I would not want to operate a private business

Applied
Working at the Mellano & Co flower market helped me come to my best answer because although I was there, there seemed to be very little differences within all the wholesalers wares and pricing, making me believe that as long as they were being supplied with enough different flowers at good enough health then they were good, because the market cannot operate without the farms sending in the flowers everyday, however, the reverse is possible, thus a knowledge of the differential traits of flowers is best because that allows you the ability to switch between the successful growing of several varieties of flowers, opening up a bigger market for you, creating a better revenue while wholesale floriculturists are only to use what they have in stock and what they have being shipped to them

Independent Study 2

a) "I, Andy Z. Rodriguez, affirm that I completed my independent component which represents 30 hours of work.”

(b)Over the past two months I had to work on a strict schedule, I couldn't just "put it off till next week" I forced myself to go out every other day to give the flowers their water, in this way I had to work hands on with them. It is quite a serene experience, feeding them, watering them, I began to see even more why people have such an appreciation for them, flowers are alive, they have texture, they have beauty. In addition to working on my own flowers and serving their needs, a few times i took the opportunity to help out someone with their garden.

Interpretive
30 hours of work, with more than half of it watering, I did it all by hand, reason being, whenever farmers grow their flowers rarely do they go face to face with each single stalk, I didn't want to do that. Although most of views are for industry floriculturist that does not mean that I should "industrialize" the process, because if I can't appreciate them, then how could I expect a customer, with so many other things on their shopping list, to? The other two parts consisted of lawnwork,  which I did because I had to remove any environmental factors that would threaten the well being of my flowers whether it be trees, weeds, or hungry rabbits along with prepping a spot to carry flowers which form the backbone of my senior project. Thirdly, I helped a few other people within their own flowers, helping them achieve their own success with floral

Applied
What is most is most important for a Floriculturist to know to be successful

As I was growing my flowers, those that tended to be lacking in nutrients didn't grow healthy as those that did, and water, those that lacked for water appeared to have died, therefore I believe it is important to understand that plants need water, they appear to not be able to survive without it. The soil itself, when I had to prep the soil for planting I always took a look at the pH, in addition I tended to mix food in with it, however whatever flowers i were planting needed only a certain amount of the layer to be soft because otherwise the roots would not able to hold the plant still, and the tall ones would tend to tip over in loose soil. Observing this, I reason that another answer would be that a knowledge of soil consistency would be a large benefit for anyone who wants to get the most out of their flowers

20-Min Lesson Plan Draft

1) Flower Sale
2) What is most important for a Floriculturist to know in order to be successful?
3) Objective: To educate the students on the concept of how flowers are imported and transported throughout the L.A. flower industry
4) Hook: A chart of the world with trails highlighted upon where they are imported to California and then sold wholesale to florists and supermarkets
Low: explain how Wholesale flowers work, such as Mellano & Co.
Med: explain how the market on importation works and the changes in technology behind it
High: compare different parts of the world and their part of the industry in California
Activity: during the presentation ill have showed flowers and what parts of the world they are from
I give everyone a picture of their flower and ask them to sit in a corresponding spot with one location representing california, and then i ask every country(group) to try to get their flowers from their table to california without leaving their seats, yet they may use any other means at their disposal with the following rules
1) Flowers must remain in good condition, a crumble up thrown flower(paper) will result in a bad shipment to the market and the group doesnt get a point
without telling them i will also hand them rubber bands to each group (increase in ship capabilities)
and envelopes (the introduction of freeze-dried flower shipments)

Due to how it is set up, the group that represent California farms will win because although they are still competeing agiansnt the world market, this just goes to show how they will always maintain the home advantage within the floral market industry

Interview III

For this interview, I chose my mother, Amanda Rodriguez, because she is an accountant who handles the files on quality and shipments and directly works for Mr. Mellano, the sole owner

1) From what you've seen, what is the best thing that the company does administratively?
2) What is the worse?

Well really the company doesn't sell all the flowers, it just owns the warehouses. What we do is we rent out those spaces to sellers but we still control a large part of all the business around here but over the past few years more and more private sellterss have setting up shops on the outside, taking away business and we cant do anything about them. Though through time the company has been purchasing more and more growing farms so there is no middle man when it comes from the field to what we sell

3) How is accounting for a Flower company different than other businesses?

Flowers can die, we have a budget with the money and we have budget on time, once the flowers are in the market, they are there until they sell, sometimes we have to be verrry specific about orders because we lose money whenever flowers are thrown out

4) On the floor, what determine which sellers make the best sales statistically?

I'm not really sure but I guess I would have to say its the one's with the best customer service because alot of the businesses sell the same types of flowers, so really its up to appealing to passing people or actually having long-time buyers like florists

5) How do you handle the imported shipments from places like Hawaii, Australia, Isreal, etc. ?

Well they are freezed and then shipped here, we get flowers from all over and usually a company from one those countries sells them to us and we just get them here into the market. I don't do the paperwork for those

6) How does the market fluctuate in pricing?

Well sometimes the farmers have disasters or things just go wrong and no one gets a certain type of flower so thats when you have an increase in the price, but because flowers are grown everywhere, some businesses may have contracts somewhere else which means they still get that specific kind of flower

7) What is Mellano & Co. doing to expand its business?

Like I said, they are buy more and more acres up north in California so they dont have to pay full pricing as often

8) Who are your main customers?

Florists and Wedding Planners...their jobs require massive amounts of flowers so they buy it wholesale from us

9) How does time in shipping affect how the flowers are when they are seen in the market?

Ones that are grown in California last a couple days longer than the imported ones, but other than that it doesn't really make a difference, they are dried out before we freeze them so they don't die while coming here

10) What do you do specifically to help support the business?

I crunch the numbers on all the sales and I make sure people are getting the shipments they ordered

What is Most Important for a Floriculturist to know in order to be successful?

1) Healthiest Stock
2) Competitive Pricing
3) Flower Types Provided

Effective Learner

Currently I have complete one 10-hour day work day with my uncle at Mellano and Co. where he owns his own business. During my time there I help them load and unload shipments. Transport the flowers across the market and help customers with the prices when they came by. However, the part that got me thinking about my topic the most was when I had to wrap and inspect the flowers personally to check their health. By doing this, I learn which ones were the healthiest and the people most desired. Above are bright healthy roses that i took home as I finished my learning and you did indeed see them the monday after that. however they were probabaly not in their best state then due to decomposition, nonetheless
I know you saw them.

SERVICE LEARNING

Currently i am working with Uncle Charlie Moreno at his wholesale flower business, however i complete my last 10 hours with my uncle Arnold because he wasnt working that day. Over there I help my uncle bring and take the shipments to the space, wrap up and cut the flowers, and help customers get large orders put together. His business is located in the warehouses owned by Mellano & Co. in L.A.
